But the big news is for me… they were cutting The Ballad of John and Yoko… I walked into Abbey Road Studio B and there’s Paul, on drums; there’s John on rhythm, and they’re recording The Ballad of John and Yoko — and they’re getting along famously! These guys are not supposed to be talking to each other anymore — you know? But it was like great. Then John does lead, Paul does bass and it becomes The Ballad of John and Yoko… Being naïve and young — I thought, “my god, these guys aren’t even supposed to be in the same room together!” [Laughs.]

  The Beatles were all very nice, humble, modest, kind and down-to-earth people. This actually shocked me since other celebrities I had met before disappointed me and did not live up to my expectations -- this was one of the reasons I really didn’t even want to meet the Beatles initially. I had been disillusioned before, but the Beatles were wonderful. I was closest to John and George since they were my "course buddies" during our studies with the Maharishi.

  limbic, and motor regions were activated by all musical pieces. Notable, areas in the medial orbitofrontal region and the anterior cingulate cortex, which are relevant for self-referential appraisal and aesthetic judgments, were found to be activated during the listening. A further interesting finding was that vocal and instrumental music were processed differently. In particular, the presence of lyrics was found to shift the processing of musical features towards the right auditory cortex, which suggests a left-hemispheric dominance in the processing of the lyrics.

• LACMA presents The X, Y, and Z portfolios by American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe

  The exhibition, Robert Mapplethorpe: XYZ, features a total of thirty-nine black-and-white photographs, exploring three subject matters: homosexual sadomasochistic imagery (X, published in 1978); flower still lifes (Y, 1978); and nude portraits of African American men (Z, 1981). LACMA’s presentation will showcase the works in three rows—X above, Y in the middle, and Z along the bottom—an idea which was suggested by Mapplethorpe in 1989.
